Elfriede Anna Mercer, 89, died peacefully on Sunday, September 11, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. She was born November 4, 1926, in the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia. She was the daughter of Dr. Johann Spitzenberger and Josefa Christmann.

She married Dr. Gerald D. Mercer in Linz, Austria, where they met when he re-enlisted into the Military Intelligence Service after the WWII. They moved back to the U.S. to live in Curtis and Lincoln, Nebraska. They had two children, Dr. H. Dean Mercer (Betty) and Kim Mercer Ferguson (Larry). Elfriede Anna Mercer, 89, died peacefully on Sunday, September 11, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. She was born November 4, 1926, in the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia. She was the daughter of Dr. Johann Spitzenberger and Josefa Christmann.

She married Dr. Gerald D. Mercer in Linz, Austria, where they met when he re-enlisted into the Military Intelligence Service after the WWII. They moved back to the U.S. to live in Curtis and Lincoln, Nebraska. They had two children, Dr. H. Dean Mercer (Betty) and Kim Mercer Ferguson (Larry). Elfriede and Gerald also lived in Midland, Michigan; Memphis, Tennessee and moved to Dallas, TX in 2007.

After more than 20 years as an accountant, she retired from St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, prior to moving to Dallas, TX.

She was an active member of several Presbyterian Churches throughout her life and finally with Grace Outreach Center in Plano after they moved to Dallas. Elfriede and Gerald enjoyed traveling around the world, playing bridge, watching football with their neighbors and spending time with family, especially with their grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Johann Spitzenberger and Josefa Christmann; her husband Gerald Mercer and her granddaughter Erin Ferguson.

Elfriede is survived by her son H. Dean Mercer (Betty), her daughter Kim M. Ferguson (Larry); grandchildren Doug Mercer (Aimee), Jaclyn Starkey (Marc), Samantha Collins (Peter), and Clayton Ferguson; great grandchildren: Gavin, Wesley, Jaxon, Dylan, Maya and Lyla. She is also survived by her brother Otto Spitzenberger and her niece Martina. Elfriede's son and daughter will receive family and friends for visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, September 16th, at the Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, 7990 George Bush Turnpike in Dallas, TX. Pastor Mike Clunie of the Grace Outreach Center, will lead a memorial service for family and friends at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 17th at the same location.
